1. A method for controlling an optical system comprising at least one active light-controlling element having one or more sub-elements, the method comprising:
a. creating, with the optical system, a first optical image in an image plane;
b. converting, with an image sensor located near the image plane, the first optical image to a first digital image with at least one sub-area requiring a light level adjustment;
c. analyzing, with a processor, the first digital image to determine a required light transmission level setting of at least one of the one or more sub-elements of the at least one active light-controlling element to adjust the light level of the at least one sub-area to a desired light level;
d. adjusting, with a controller, the light transmission level setting of the at least one of the one or more sub-elements of the at least one active light-controlling element;
e. creating, with the optical system and the at least one of the one or more sub-elements of the at least one active light-controlling element at the adjusted light transmission level setting, a second optical image in the image plane; and
f. converting, with the image sensor, the second optical image to a second digital image.
