1. A method for video coding, the method being executed by at least one processor, the method comprising:
parsing a bitstream associated with coded video data;
determining, based on a value of a first syntax element in a video parameter set (VPS), whether a picture order count value increases uniformly per access unit;
based on determining that the picture order count value increases uniformly per access unit, determining an access unit count for a respective access unit based on dividing the picture order count value by a picture order count cycle access unit value;
based on determining that the picture order count value does not increase uniformly per access unit, determining the access unit count for the respective access unit based on dividing the picture order count value by a slice picture order count cycle access unit value; and
decoding the coded video data based on the access unit count.
