1. A control system for a heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system, comprising:
primary control circuitry configured to operate the HVAC system in a variable operating mode based on data received from a first type of thermostat; and
secondary control circuitry configured to communicatively couple to the primary control circuitry, wherein, in response to a determination that a thermostat communicatively coupled to the secondary control circuitry is a second type of thermostat different from the first type of thermostat, the secondary control circuitry is configured to transmit additional data to the primary control circuitry to enable operation of the HVAC system in the variable operating mode via the primary control circuitry and based on the additional data,
wherein the control system is configured to determine that the thermostat is the first type of thermostat or the second type of thermostat.
