1. A method for transmitting data through a multi-media communication network, comprising:
transmitting physical data symbols through a first communication medium having a first communication characteristic;
transmitting the physical data symbols through a second communication medium that is a different type of communication medium than the first communication medium, the second communication medium having a second communication characteristic that has a predetermined relationship with the first communication characteristic; and
translating the physical data symbols for exchange between the first and second communication mediums without converting the physical data symbols into transmission entities, the first and second communication mediums being communicatively coupled in series.
