1. A device, comprising:
a processor configured to:
capture, via an image sensor, a plurality of images of an item;
adjust a mode of operation of the device, wherein the device is capable of operating in either an indicia-reading mode or a currency validation (CVAL) mode;
detect presence or absence of an indicia item within at least one captured image;
in response to detecting the presence of the indicia item, operate the device in the indicia-reading mode to read at least one indicia; and
in response to detecting the absence of the indicia item, operate the device in the currency validation (CVAL) mode to validate a currency item.
