1. A method comprising:
determining a plurality of musical acts corresponding to a level of a rhythm-based game, wherein each musical act corresponds to a respective song portion and comprises a plurality of different audio tracks each comprising versions of the respective song portion, and wherein each audio track of the plurality of audio tracks for a given musical act corresponds to a respective tier of a set of player performance tiers;
beginning the level of the rhythm-based game, wherein a beginning of the level corresponds to an initial musical act and an initial player performance tier;
determining a first musical act and a first player performance tier corresponding to a current state of the rhythm-based game based on progression of a player through the level;
playing back audio of a first audio track, of the plurality of different audio tracks corresponding to the first musical act, that corresponds to the first player performance tier;
tracking a plurality of player actions using a tier meter, wherein player actions performed on beat with the audio of a current audio track cause the tier meter to increase;
determining, based on the tier meter, that the player has advanced to a second player performance tier of the set of player performance tiers but remains within the first musical act; and
in response to determining that the player has advanced to the second player performance tier, playing back audio of a second audio track, of the plurality of different audio tracks corresponding to the first musical act, that corresponds to the second player performance tier.
