1. A fitness system comprising:
a rowing machine
a processor in communication with the rowing machine; and
a memory that stores computer-executable instructions that, as a result of being executed by the one or more processors, cause the fitness system to:
obtain performance metrics corresponding to a series of workout sessions performed by a user using the rowing machine, each workout session of the series of workout sessions comprising a plurality of intervals corresponding to one of a number of different intensity levels;
compare the performance metrics over at least a subset of the plurality of intervals of at least two of the workout sessions of the series of workout sessions with a prescribed performance of the corresponding interval within the at least two workout sessions to generate interval comparisons;
categorize individual interval comparisons of the interval comparisons as relating to one of a sprint fitness interval corresponding to a shorter duration or higher intensity or an endurance fitness interval corresponding to a longer duration or a lower intensity based on attributes of the interval that is the subject of the individual interval comparison; and
modify at least one of a length or an intensity level of at least one future interval of a future workout session based on the interval comparisons and based on whether the at least one future interval corresponds to a sprint fitness interval or an endurance fitness interval.
