1. A dialysis system comprising a liquid flow line, a control system, and a gas bubble detector, the gas bubble detector comprising:
first and second conductive plates forming a capacitor with a capacitance that varies with a permittivity of a liquid flow line within a dialysis system; wherein the liquid flow line is positioned within the dialysis system;
a capacitance sensor measuring a capacitance between the first conductive plate and the second conductive plate; and
the control system programmed to determine a presence of one or more gas bubbles within the liquid flow line based on the capacitance between the first conductive plate and the second conductive plate; the control system operating to divert liquid flow away from the liquid flow line in the dialysis system in response to the capacitance sensor detecting a capacitance which drops below a predetermined value.
