1. A valve repair device for repairing a native heart valve of a patient, the valve repair device comprising:
a spacer element;
a pair of paddles coupled to the spacer element;
a pair of gripping members disposed between the pair of paddles;
wherein the paddles and the gripping members are movable toward one another to attach to leaflets of the native heart valve;
wherein, seen in a plan view from an upstream side of the native heart valve, the spacer element extends past side edges of the pair of gripping member; and
wherein the spacer element is configured such that the spacer element can (i) be disposed between the leaflets of the native heart valve, (ii) inhibit flow through the valve repair device, and (iii) divide an orifice between a ventricle and an atrium of the native heart valve into two orifices.
