1. A method of operating a transmission in a powertrain comprising:
detecting a gear shift occurring with the transmission;
estimating a torque assist capacity associated with a power source connected to direct torque to the transmission;
determining a gear shift torque value associated with the gear shift as detected;
comparing the torque assist capacity with the gear shift torque value; and
conducting the gear shift if the torque assist capacity complies with the gear shift torque value.
