1. A method for configuring an implantable stimulator device for a patient using an external system in communication with the implantable stimulator device, wherein the implantable stimulator device comprises an electrode array implanted in the patient, the method comprising:
(a) providing a plurality of selectable options in a user interface of the external system, wherein each selectable option comprises an anatomical target, wherein each anatomical target is associated in the external system with a pole configuration configured to recruit that anatomical target;
(b) receiving an input at the user interface to select one of the anatomical targets; and
(c) applying the pole configuration associated with the selected anatomical target at a position in the electrode array.
