1. A method, comprising:
receiving, via at least one processor of a cloud-computing system, a request to communicatively couple from a remote terminal unit (RTU) at a hydrocarbon site;
providing an acknowledgement message at the at least one processor of the cloud-computing system from the remote terminal unit at the hydrocarbon site;
receiving identification data at the at least one processor of the cloud-computing system from the remote terminal unit at the hydrocarbon site, the identification data being associated with the remote terminal unit or the hydrocarbon site;
identifying a software or firmware update for the remote terminal unit using the identification data; and
sending to the remote terminal unit the software or firmware update.
