1. A head mounted display system configured to project light to an eye of a user to display augmented reality image content in a vision field of said user, said head-mounted display system comprising:
a frame configured to be supported on a head of the user;
an image projector configured to project images into the user's eye to display image content in the vision field of the user;
a camera;
at least one waveguide having first and second major surfaces such that light is guided therein;
at least one coupling optical element configured such that light is coupled into said at least one waveguide and guided therein, wherein the at least one coupling optical element comprises a diffractive optical element;
at least one out-coupling element configured to couple light guided within said at least one waveguide out of said at least one waveguide and direct said light to said camera, wherein the at least one out-coupling element comprises a diffractive optical element;
a plurality of infrared light sources disposed between the at least one waveguide and the user's eye to illuminate the user's eye, said plurality of infrared light sources configured to direct light onto the user's eye without being coupled into and guided through any waveguide, the camera being configured to capture images periodically and the plurality of infrared light sources being configured to pulse in time with the camera capturing the images such that the plurality of infrared light sources have a reduced intensity when the camera is not capturing images; and
a reflective optical element configured to collimate light from the user's eye, said reflective optical element not within said at least one waveguide between said first and second major surface of said at least one waveguide,
wherein the camera is disposed in an optical path with respect to said at least one out-coupling optical element to receive at least a portion of the light that is coupled into said waveguide via the coupling element and guided therein and that is coupled out from said waveguide by said outcoupling coupling element such that images may be captured by said camera, and
wherein the plurality of infrared light sources are oriented to face the user's eye to direct light thereto.
