1. A method comprising:
asynchronously sampling a data signal according to a sampling clock having a frequency less than a data rate of the data signal using a first sampler to generate data decisions;
generating corresponding pattern-verified samples for at least two data patterns using a second sampler having a variable decision threshold, the at least two data patterns comprising a transitional data pattern and a non-transitional data pattern having differing frequency content, each pattern-verified sample corresponding to a sample of the data signal based on the variable decision threshold during reception of a corresponding one of the at least two data patterns detected in the data decisions generated by the first sampler;
determining corresponding frequency-specific voltage measurements for each of the at least two data patterns, each frequency-specific voltage measurement generated by adjusting the variable decision threshold of the second sampler based on the corresponding pattern-verified samples generated in response to detection of the corresponding data pattern; and
adjusting an equalization of the data signal based on a comparison of the corresponding frequency-specific voltage measurements.
