1. A process for removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from blood of a patient, comprising:
contacting blood to a dialysis liquid via a semipermeable membrane, wherein the dialysis liquid is characterized by:
(i) a pH the range from pH 9.0 to pH 11.0;
(ii) comprising at least one non-CO2-forming buffering agent selected from the group consisting of albumin and Tris, wherein the buffering agent has at least one pKa value in the range from 7.0 to 11.0; and
(iii) a buffering capacity of 12 mmol/1 or more for H+ ions; and
removing CO2 in the mmol/min range from the blood of the patient.
