1. A communication device for a hearing protection system, the hearing protection system comprising one or more hearing protection devices, the one or more hearing protection devices comprise a first hearing protection device, the communication device comprising:
a processing unit;
a memory; and
an interface comprising:
a first hearing protection device interface comprising a first connector; and
a second hearing protection device interface comprising a second connector;
wherein each of the first connector and the second connector is selectable for connection with the first hearing protection device; and
wherein the first connector and the second connector are identical connectors of the communication device, and wherein the communication device is configured to support multiple functions of the first hearing protection device regardless of whether the first hearing protection device is connected to the first connector or the second connector of the communication device.
