1. A gaming system comprising:
a processor; and
a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
maintain a progressive award,
responsive to an occurrence of a progressive award triggering event, determine a first probability of a first gaming device winning the progressive award, wherein the first gaming device is associated with a first grouping of gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a first range of average expected payback percentages and the first probability is based on a wager amount placed and a first progressive award contribution rate associated with the first grouping of gaming devices, and
responsive to the occurrence of the progressive award triggering event, determine a second, different probability of a second gaming device winning the progressive award, wherein the second gaming device is associated with a second, different grouping of gaming devices having average expected payback percentages in a second, different range of average expected payback percentages and the second, different probability is based on the wager amount placed and a second, different progressive award contribution rate associated with the second, different grouping of gaming devices.
