1. A portable chip device, comprising:
a chip having memory and an operating system and software loader functionality installed in the memory, the software loader functionality being configured to load a software module onto the chip and/or to render the software module in the chip executable;
a communications interface configured to communicate with an external reader device;
the portable chip device being configured to carry out a software module update by:
receiving a second key with the software loader functionality via communication between the external reader device and the communications interface, wherein the communication is encrypted with a first key, and storing the second key in the chip, the operating system being configured to provide the decryption of the communication encrypted with the first key;
authenticating the external reader device using the stored second key;
receiving software module update data with the software loader functionality via the communications interface;
executing the software module update with the software module update data, using the software loader functionality.
