1. A method comprising:
at a handheld electronic device that includes one or more light emitters and one or more light detectors:
driving the one or more light emitters;
detecting one or more amounts of light via the one or more light detectors;
determining that a first light emitter of the one or more light emitters is optically occluded by an object outside a housing of the handheld electronic device based on a first amount of light of the one or more amounts of light detected via a first light detector of the one or more light detectors; and
while the first light emitter is determined to be optically occluded by the object outside the housing of the handheld electronic device, forgoing driving the first light emitter for spatial tracking of the handheld electronic device and/or a second light emitter, different from the first light emitter, for spatial tracking of the handheld electronic device.
