20. An apparatus for imaging an object, the apparatus comprising:
a waveguide;
a spatial light modulator (SLM) positioned on the surface of the waveguide forming an interface therewith, wherein the SLM is suitable for supporting the object to be imaged thereon,
the interface constituting a SLM-waveguide interface;
a source of electromagnetic radiation positioned to direct electromagnetic radiation through the waveguide so that the electromagnetic radiation is totally internally reflected through the wave-guide and impinges the SLM-waveguide interface and is reflected therefrom;
a source of visible light or near infrared light positioned to illuminate sections of the SLM;
a device configured to provide spatially patterning of the visible light or near infrared light so as to spatially modulate the electromagnetic radiation at the SLM; and
a detector configured to detect the reflected modulated electromagnetic radiation exiting the waveguide and to reconstruct an image of the object from the reflected modulated electromagnetic radiation.
