1. A method performed by at least one programmed processor of an electronic device, the method comprising:
determining a level of ambient sound within an acoustic environment using a microphone signal captured by a microphone of the electronic device;
receiving, from a headset worn by a user, data indicating an audio processing mode in which the headset is operating and one or more device characteristics of the headset;
using the data, the one or more device characteristics, and the level of ambient sound to determine a level of attenuation for the ambient sound at an ear of the user caused by the headset that is worn by the user;
estimating sound exposure based on at least the level of attenuation and the level of ambient sound; and
transmitting the sound exposure to an application program.
