1. A network device for tracing data packets, the network device comprising:
at least one processor; and
at least one memory storing instructions which when executed by the at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to:
receive, at the network device, a data packet sent from a source node to a destination node;
update, at the network device, the data packet to include an identifier of the network device, an ingress timestamp of the data packet at the network device, and a type, length and value (TLV) field of the data packet based on packet tracing information,
wherein the network device is at least one device on a path between the source node and destination node and is configured to transmit the data packet at least a portion of the path between the source node and the destination node.
