1. An extender for a coherent passive optical network (PON), comprising:
an optical-electrical unit (i) including a coherent transceiver, and (ii) configured to convert a first downstream aggregated coherent optical signal into a plurality of downstream electrical transmission signals by terminating a plurality of downstream optical wavelengths contained within the first downstream aggregated coherent optical signal;
a signal adaptation unit including (i) an upstream adapter portion configured to receive the plurality of downstream electrical transmission signals from the optical-electrical unit, and (ii) a downstream adapter portion configured to output a plurality of individual downstream coherent optical wavelengths corresponding to the plurality of downstream electrical transmission signals, respectively; and
a first multiplexer configured to bundle the plurality of individual downstream coherent optical wavelengths into a second downstream aggregated coherent optical signal for retransmission to at least one of an optical node, a downstream termination unit, and an end-user,
wherein the first downstream aggregated coherent optical signal is different from the second downstream aggregated coherent optical signal.
