1. A method for using a self-encrypting drive (SED), the method comprising:
obtaining, by a baseboard management controller (BMC), a security operation request;
sending security state requests to a set of storage devices in the computing device;
obtaining security state responses from the set of storage devices;
making a determination that the security operation request specifies one of a list consisting of: securing the set of storage devices, and unlocking the set of storage devices;
identifying, in response to the determination that the security operation request specifies unlocking the set of storage devices, a drive on a computing device as a SED,
wherein the set of storage devices comprises the drive, and
wherein one of the security state responses indicates that the drive is in a secured state;
unlocking, in response to the security operation request and based on the one of the secured state responses, the SED by the BMC,
wherein the BMC is on the computing device; and
registering, after the unlocking, the SED with an operating system executing on the computing device.
