1. A method of charging an energy storage system using a wind turbine, the method comprising:
generating power with the wind turbine, the wind turbine having a generator;
monitoring, by sensors, prevailing wind conditions;
determining, at a first instance of time, the power generated by the wind turbine can be increased above a rated power based on an operating speed of the wind turbine;
in response to the determining, determining whether the energy storage system is capable of taking a charge;
in response to determining the energy storage system is not capable of taking the charge:
determining the energy storage system is not fully charged;
in response to determining the energy storage system is not fully charged, determining, at a second instance of time occurring after the first instance of time, the power generated by the wind turbine can be increased above the rated power based on the operating speed of the wind turbine; and
re-determining whether the energy storage system is capable of taking the charge; and
in response to determining the energy storage system is capable of taking the charge:
increasing the power generated by the wind turbine above the rated power of the wind turbine in order to maximize a charge level of the energy storage system; and
using additional power generated by the power increase to charge the energy storage system.
