1. A heterogeneous desulfurization catalyst for hydrocarbon sweetening, comprising:
a solid catalyst comprising:
a support comprising Al2O3 in an amount of at least 95 wt. %, based upon total support weight, the support being inert to desulfurization at ambient conditions;
copper (II) ions upon and impregnated within the support in an amount of at least 95 wt. %, based upon total catalytically active metals in the catalyst at the ambient conditions, and
a liquid comprising at least 75 wt. % H2O, based upon total solvent weight, wherein the Al2O3 is α-Al2O3,
wherein the copper salt is selected from the group consisting of Cu(NO3)2, CuCl2 and Cu(CO3) and mixtures thereof,
wherein the solid catalyst comprises less than 1 wt. % CuO and less than 1 wt. % Fe, based upon the total active metal content in the solid catalyst,
wherein the solid catalyst comprises the copper (II) salt in an amount of from 16 to 17 wt. %, based on a total weight of the solid catalyst, and
wherein the solid catalyst comprises no activated carbon.
