1. A power pack removably loadable into a surgical instrument housing having a compartment at a proximal region of a surgical instrument, the surgical instrument having an elongated portion extending distally from the surgical instrument housing and distally of the compartment and first and second jaws adjacent a distal portion of the elongated portion, the power pack loadable into the compartment positioned and accessible outside the body of the patient during use, the power pack comprising a power pack housing defining a proximal end and a distal end, the power pack housing containing a first motor having a motor shaft, a drive mechanism operably connected to the first motor, and a first engagement member linearly movable by the drive mechanism, the first engagement member configured to removably mechanically engage an axially movable member in the surgical instrument housing and the first engagement member moves along with the axially movable member in a distal direction, the axially movable member engaged by the first engagement member proximal of the elongated portion, wherein actuation of the first motor within the power pack converts rotary motion to linear motion within the power pack to cause linear movement of the first engagement member to cause movement of the engaged axially movable member in an axial direction, wherein the power pack is configured such that a) loading of the power pack containing the first motor, drive mechanism and first engagement member into the compartment of the surgical instrument housing causes engagement of the axially movable member by the first engagement member and b) removal of the power pack from the surgical instrument compartment disengages mechanical engagement of the first engagement member from the axially movable member.
