1. A system comprising:
a channel selection engine; and
a gateway device located at a premises and in communication with the channel selection engine, wherein the gateway device is configured to:
discover one or more first frequencies of an extended frequency range of a second protocol utilized for communications by at least one first device configured to communicate multimedia over coaxial cabling at the premises using a first protocol, the extended frequency range comprising a frequency extension over a legacy frequency range;
discover one or more second frequencies of the legacy frequency range utilized for communications by at least one second device that is associated with the second protocol, wherein the gateway device is further configured to:
block signals of the second protocol within the extended frequency range, and
determine spectrum utilization data of the discovered first frequencies;
provide the determined spectrum utilization data to the channel selection engine;
transmit the discovered first and second frequencies to the channel selection engine;
receive a channel configuration output from the channel selection engine; and
configure an available communication channel for the at least one first device to communicate multimedia over the coaxial cabling at the premises according to the channel configuration output.
