1. A method, comprising:
designating a treatment period during which a patient is sleeping, a start time of the treatment period being selected from the group consisting of:
the patient turning on a therapy device,
expiration of a timer started by the patient,
a selectable, predetermined start time, and
an auto-detected initiation of sleep;
automatically initiating, at the start time, repeated delivering of stimulation, via a first stimulation element and throughout the treatment period, to an upper airway patency-related nerve to cause contraction of upper airway patency-related muscles; and
delivering upon detecting and recognizing a central sleep apnea event, via a second stimulation element and during the treatment period, stimulation to a central sleep apnea-related nerve.
