1. A method for obtaining and displaying ultrasound images, the method comprising:
transmitting ultrasound signals into a volume of interest and receiving echo signals from within the volume of interest;
beamforming the echo signals to yield an original 2D ultrasound image;
performing speckle reduction on the original 2D ultrasound image;
compressing the speckle-reduced 2D ultrasound image, wherein the compression of the speckle-reduced 2D ultrasound image produces a compressed speckle-reduced 2D ultrasound image with reduced size over a comparable compression of the original 2D ultrasound image;
transmitting the compressed speckle-reduced 2D ultrasound image over a data communication link to a display device;
at the display device, decompressing and scan converting the compressed speckle-reduced 2D ultrasound image; and
displaying the decompressed and scan-converted speckle-reduced 2D ultrasound image on a display of the display device.
