1. A method for wireless communication by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:
transmitting, to a first access node, a first message that includes a random access preamble, a UE identifier to facilitate a connection configuration process, and a buffer status report in order to initiate the connection configuration process;
receiving, from the first access node, a response to the first message, the response including a reference signal and at least one (1) bit message indicating whether the UE is to remain active to continue the connection configuration process, wherein the one (1) bit message is set to a ‘1’ value to indicate to the UE that the connection configuration process is to remain active based on the buffer status report indicating that the UE has uplink data to transmit or the first access node has downlink data to transmit; and
maintaining the connection configuration process based on the response to the first message.
