1. An audience measurement computing system comprising:
at least one processor;
a non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions that, upon execution by the at least one processor, cause the audience measurement computing system to perform operations comprising:
collecting a first signature obtained from a first location and a second signature obtained from a second location, the first signature and the second signature associated with respective presentations of unidentified media being presented to a plurality of locations including at least the first location and the second location, and wherein the second signature is associated with metadata identifying the unidentified media;
determining that the first signature does not match reference signatures in a reference signature database and the first signature does not match unidentified signatures in an unknown signature database;
in response to determining that the first signature does not match the reference signatures in the reference signature database and the first signature does not match the unidentified signatures in the unknown signature database, updating the unknown signature database by storing the first signature in the unknown signature database as a preliminary signature associated with the unidentified media;
determining that the second signature does not match the reference signatures in the reference signature database and the second signature does match the preliminary signature in the unknown signature database;
in response to determining that the second signature does not match the reference signatures in the reference signature database and the second signature matches the preliminary signature in the unknown signature database, increasing a count associated with the preliminary signature;
determining that the count associated with the preliminary signature satisfies a count threshold; and
in response to determining that the count satisfies the count threshold, storing the preliminary signature as a new reference signature in the reference signature database and associating the metadata identifying the unidentified media with the preliminary-signature in the reference signature database.
