1. A method for making a pre-lithiated electrode for a lithium ion battery cell, the method comprising:
providing a magnesium-lithium alloy, wherein the magnesium-lithium alloy has a lithium content of at least 10.2 wt. % and a magnesium content greater than 55 wt. %;
electrochemically connecting the magnesium-lithium alloy to an electrode;
pre-lithiating the electrode by transferring lithium ions from the magnesium-lithium alloy to the electrode by de-alloying the magnesium-lithium alloy to form a porous magnesium-rich microstructure having a lithium content of less than 1 wt. % lithium; and
electrochemically disconnecting the magnesium-lithium alloy from the electrode.
