1. A method of detecting in at least one watermelon plant or part thereof a genotype indicative of a male sterile phenotype, the method comprising the steps of:
obtaining a sample of nucleic acids from at least one watermelon plant or part thereof; and
detecting in said sample the presence of an allele of at least a first polymorphic nucleic acid marker in a genomic region on chromosome 6, wherein said genomic region comprises a locus that confers said male sterile phenotype, and wherein said genomic region is flanked by and comprises marker locus NW0248249 having SEQ ID NO: 22 and marker locus NCLAN009405170 having SEQ ID NO: 59, thereby detecting said genotype.
