1. A dimer of formula:
![]() or salts or solvates thereof
where:
carbons indicated by * are independently in the L- or R-stereochemical form and the compound can be racemic, non-racemic or substantially enantiomerically pure;
W and W′ are independently S or NR1, or —W—CO— or —W′—CO— is —CH═CH—, where each R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms;
L1 and L′1, independently, are divalent linkers which contain 1-12 carbon atoms, optionally 1-4 oxygen atoms, optionally one or two carbon-carbon double bonds, and hydrogen atoms to satisfy valency;
each R and R′, independently, is hydrogen or an straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms;
R3 and R′3, independently, are hydrogen or a C1-C3 alkyl;
X1, X′1, X2 and X′2 are independently selected from the group consisting of optionally-substituted straight-chain or branched alkyl groups having 3-8 carbon atoms, optionally-substituted cycloalkyl groups having 3-12 carbon atoms;
optionally-substituted aryl, optionally-substituted heteroaryl, optionally-substituted heterocycyl, optionally-substituted cycloalkylalkyl, optionally-substituted arylalkyl, optionally-substituted heteroarylalkyl and optionally-substituted heterocycylalkyl groups; and
L2 is a divalent chemical moiety which contains 1-20 carbons atoms, and optionally contains 1-6 heteroatoms selected from oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur with hydrogens as needed to satisfy valency.
