1. An outboard motor including an actuator configured to operate based on an operation of an operating portion performed by a user, and a transmission mechanism configured to change a rotational output of an internal combustion engine based on an operation of the actuator,
the outboard motor comprising:
an operation position detection unit configured to detect an operation position of the operating portion;
a shift position detection unit configured to detect an actual shift position of the transmission mechanism;
an actuator detection unit configured to detect a state of the actuator; and
a control unit configured to acquire the operation position, the actual shift position, and the state of the actuator, which are pieces of detection information, to perform processing, wherein
the control unit performs failure determination or drive control of the actuator based on at least two pieces of detection information among the pieces of detection information, and
the control unit determines occurrence of the failure in the component related to the transmission mechanism at a time of starting the outboard motor.
