1. A method for determining a velocity of respiratory airflow of a patient, the method comprising:
(a) applying airflow across a thermistor at different flow rates and at alternating temperatures to simulate inhalation and exhalation;
(b) measuring, by the thermistor, temporal temperature T and calculating a rate of change of temperature T;
(c) employing, by at least one processor, a curve-fitting procedure to the rate of change of temperature T of the thermistor to generate an empirical function G(v) of respiratory airflow velocity v;
(d) receiving, by the at least one processor, measurements from the thermistor when positioned in fluid communication with a respiratory airflow of a patient to obtain temporal temperature T of the respiratory airflow of the patient;
(e) continuously measuring thermistor temperature T and calculating T from the thermistor when positioned in fluid communication with the respiratory airflow of the patient, to obtain airflow velocity v of the respiratory airflow of the patient based on G(v);
(f) assessing, by the at least one processor, a breathing disorder of the patient for the patient based on the airflow velocity v; and
(g) displaying by the at least one processor, on a display, the results of the assessment,
wherein G(v) is expressed as

and wherein TA is a temperature surrounding a system comprising the thermistor, CT is a constant and, R(v) is the heat transfer resistance of the thermistor.
