1. A method of calibrating an adaptive illumination system of an imager, the adaptive illumination system having an illumination source, the method comprising:
causing the adaptive illumination system to enter a calibration mode in which the illumination source of the adaptive illumination system provides a calibration illumination level to an environment;
capturing, by an imaging sensor of the imager, one or more first frames of the environment;
determining, by a processor and from the one or more first frames, a first illumination intensity for the illumination source, the first illumination intensity having an illumination intensity sufficient for detecting a presence of an object in the environment in an object detection mode of the reader, and less intensity than a second illumination intensity for illuminating the object in the environment during a scanning mode of the reader;
storing, by the processor, the determined first illumination intensity in a memory; and
configuring, by the processor, the illumination source of the adaptive illumination system to (i) provide illumination at the first illumination intensity while the adaptive illumination system is in the object detect mode, and (ii) provide illumination at the second illumination intensity while the adaptive illumination system is in the scanning mode.
