1. An image forming apparatus comprising:
a locking unit to lock a consumable unit to the image forming apparatus, the consumable unit including a customer replaceable unit monitoring (CRUM) chip;
a CRUM power supply to supply power to the CRUM chip; and
a main controller to perform an image forming job using the consumable unit,
wherein the main controller is to:
record a usage history of the consumable unit according to the image forming job on the CRUM chip by communicating with the CRUM chip;
based on a consumable unit extract command being input during the communication with the CRUM chip, end the communication with the CRUM chip and control the CRUM power supply to cut the power supplied to the CRUM chip after the communication with the CRUM chip has ended; and
based on the power cutting, control the locking unit to unlock the consumable unit.
