1. A method for analyzing a blood sample, the method comprising:
(a) treating a paper which contains a detectable level of one or more of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) with a solution consisting of a mixture of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and deionized water,
(b) rinsing the treated paper of (a) with deionized water,
(c) contacting the paper of (b) with a blood sample,
(d) disposing the paper of (c) within a protective case comprising a desiccant; and
(e) analyzing the paper of (d) for heavy metals;
wherein the treating in (a) is performed under conditions such that the treated paper has detectable levels of any one or more of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) of no more than parts-per-trillion (ppt) as measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
