1. A cartridge system for use with a dispensing system comprising a main housing assembly defining a dispensing opening and comprising a drive system, the cartridge assembly comprising:
a cartridge housing defining a first take-up reel opening and a second take-up reel opening;
a carrier reel;
a distal take-up reel defining a distal take-up reel projection, where the distal take-up reel is supported relative to the cartridge housing such that the distal take-up reel projection is accessible through the first take-up reel opening to be operably connectable to the drive system; and
a proximal take-up reel defining a proximal take-up reel projection, where the proximal take-up reel is supported relative to the cartridge housing such that the proximal take-up reel projection is accessible through the second take-up reel opening to be operatively connectable to the drive system; and
a packaging strip supported by the carrier reel, the packaging strip comprising first and second strip portions detachably secured to define a plurality of item chambers, where the item chambers are each configured to store at least one item to be dispensed; wherein
the carrier reel is adapted to store the packaging strip;
the distal take-up reel is operatively connected to the first strip portion;
the proximal take-up reel is operatively connected to the second strip portion; and
rotation of the distal and proximal take-up reels displaces the first and second strip portions to unwind the packaging strip from the carrier reel to separate the first and second strip portions such that
the first strip portion is wound onto the distal take-up reel,
the second strip portion is wound onto the proximal take-up reel, and
the cartridge housing is configured to be supported by the main housing assembly such that the item chambers are opened to allow the at least one item to be dispensed stored within the item chambers to be accessed through the dispensing opening.
