1. A method of detecting a non-healing wound comprising:
(a) contacting a test sample from a wound with a mixture of a human neutrophil elastase inhibitor and a bacterial protease substrate; and
(b) detecting the amount of bacterial protease activity on the substrate;
wherein about 10 or more milliunits of equivalent bacterial protease activity indicates a non-healing wound.
