1. A process for producing a peroxylactic acid solution, the process comprising:
forming a mixture comprising lactic acid, deionized water, hydrogen peroxide, one or more optional acid catalysts, and one or more optional sequestering agents, wherein a molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to lactic acid in the mixture is at least 1:1 up to about 6:1 (hydrogen peroxide:lactic acid); and
maintaining a temperature of the mixture below about 100° C. for a period of time of about 24 hours to about 7 days to allow the mixture to react to achieve an equilibrium peroxylactic acid solution;
wherein the equilibrium peroxylactic acid solution comprises peroxylactic acid in an amount between about 2.5% and about 15.0% (w/w), lactic acid in an amount between about 1.0% and about 10.0% (w/w) and hydrogen peroxide in an amount between about 10.0% and about 30.0% (w/w).
