1. A fluid transfer device, comprising:
a first port configured to be fluidically coupled to a patient;
a second port configured to be fluidically coupled to an external fluid reservoir;
a valve;
a seal; and
a channel between the first port and the seal, the channel configured to contain a first volume of fluid received from the patient;
the valve in an open state and the seal configured collectively to allow at least a portion of the first volume of fluid to flow from the first port toward at least one of the valve or the seal,
the valve configured to transition to a closed state when at least the portion of the first volume of fluid is contained in the channel,
the valve in the closed state and the seal configured collectively to allow a second volume of fluid to flow through a fluid flow path that bypasses the channel and the first volume of fluid contained therein.
