1. A system, the system comprising:
a management infrastructure (MI); and
a set of intermodal containers (ICs),
wherein an IC of the set of ICs comprises a tracking device that is formed based on a communications unit (CU) and an instrumentation unit (IU),
wherein the IU comprises an instrumentation package that comprises an IU processor and a first proximity wireless communication module (PWCM),
wherein the CU comprises a CU processor, a second PWCM, and a communication module (CM),
wherein the IU processor sends data to the PWCM by instructing the PWCM to send the data to the CU processor,
wherein, upon receiving the data, the PWCM:
converts the data into a low-frequency radio frequency (RF) signal,
sends the low-frequency RF signal to the PWCM using a proximity wireless communication path that is established through a wall of the IC,
wherein, upon receiving the low-frequency RF signal, the second PWCM:
converts the low-frequency RF signal to second data,
sends the second data to the CU processor,
wherein, upon receiving the second data, the CU processor:
frames the second data based on a protocol of an established communication link between the CM and the MI to generate framed second data,
sends the framed second data to the CM, and
wherein, upon receiving the framed second data, the CM transmits the framed second data to the MI using the link that is established over a network.
