1. A communication device comprising:
at least one image capturing device (ICD) that captures video and images from a field of view (FOV) of the at least one image capturing device;
a communication subsystem that enables the communication device to communicatively connect to a video communication session with at least one second communication device;
a memory having stored thereon a video communication application and a freeze frame video (FFV) module with program code for selectively presenting a freeze frame video during the video communication session; and
at least one processor communicatively coupled to the at least one image capturing device, the communication subsystem, and the memory, the at least one processor processing program instructions of the video communication application and the freeze frame video module to configure the communication device to:
present a freeze frame video to the video communication session in response to a trigger received at the communication device while the communication device is connected to the video communication session, the freeze frame video comprising a video segment of an image of a first participant with a background that is presented during recording of the freeze frame video;
capture, via the at least one image capturing device while presenting the freeze frame video, live video of the FOV which includes the first participant and a current background;
compare visual characteristics in the live video with visual characteristics of the freeze frame video to detect, within the live video, a change in at least one visual characteristic of the live video that can present a visual distraction to other participants of the video communication session while transitioning from presenting the freeze frame video to presenting the live video to the video communication session; and
in response to detecting the change:
modify aspects of the live video to provide a modified live video that retains the at least one visual characteristic consistent with the freeze frame video; and
present the modified live video to the video communication session on transition from presenting the freeze frame video.
