1. A system for providing electric power in an elevated work platform (EWP), comprising:
a. a photonic power module configured to generate light from electrical energy;
b. an optical fiber for transmitting said light;
c. a photovoltaic power converter configured to receive said light and generate electrical power;
d. a battery charging circuit coupled to the photovoltaic power converter;
e. a rechargeable battery coupled to the battery charging circuit; and
f. a latching relay configured to control power distribution from the rechargeable battery based on a signal indicating power output from the photovoltaic power converter, wherein the latching relay comprises a relay switch portion configured to:
i. connect the rechargeable battery to a power distribution system to signal that upper controls of the EWP should be turned ON when the signal indicates that the photovoltaic power converter is outputting electric power, and
ii. disconnect the rechargeable battery from the power distribution system when the EWP is turned OFF to prevent battery drain during system downtime.
