1. A process for extending an oligonucleotide analog primer by template-directed polymerization, wherein said process comprises:
(a) contacting in aqueous solution a template oligonucleotide that has a portion that is substantially complementary to said oligonucleotide analog primer, said aqueous solution also containing
(b) a DNA polymerase, an RNA polymerase, and/or a reverse transcriptase, and nucleoside triphosphates, followed by
(c) incubating the resulting mixture for a preselected time and at a preselected temperature, wherein one or more of the nucleotide units in said oligonucleotide analog primer has, instead of a standard nucleobase, a substituted heterocycle that has the structure

wherein the Z attached to the alkynyl or alkenyl linker is either H, CH3, an alkyl group, or an alkyl group carrying a tag, and wherein R is the point of attachment of said substituted heterocycle to the remainder of said oligonucleotide analog primer.
