1. A catalyst suitable for the production of hydrogen from a H2S-containing gas stream by catalytic oxidative cracking, the catalyst comprising a carrier and nickel as the sole catalytically active metal, wherein said active metal is in the form of its sulfide, wherein said active metal is supported by said carrier and wherein said carrier comprises ceria and alumina, wherein the active metal in its sulfide form is present in the catalyst in a range from 1-40 wt %; wherein the concentrations are expressed based on the total weight of catalyst when the catalyst is present as a powder; and wherein the concentrations are expressed based on the total weight of a catalytic layer when the catalyst comprises a mechanical substrate.
 
6. A catalyst comprising a carrier and at least one active metal,
wherein the at least one active metal is selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, and combinations thereof;
wherein the active metal is in the form of its sulfide;
wherein the active metal in its sulfide form is present in the catalyst in a range from 8 to 25 wt %, wherein the concentrations are expressed based on the total weight of the catalyst when the catalyst is present as a powder, and wherein the concentrations are expressed based on the total weight of the catalytic layer when the catalyst comprises a mechanical substrate;
wherein the support comprises ceria and alumina, in a weight ratio for ceria to total ceria and alumina
