1. An apparatus for forming an amphiphilic membrane, the apparatus comprising:
a substrate comprising a recess, wherein the recess is configured to contain polar medium, and wherein the recess opens at a surface of the substrate; and
pillars, wherein the pillars extend from the surface of the substrate and extend parallel to an axis normal to the surface of the substrate, and wherein gaps between the pillars are configured to allow flow of an apolar medium;
wherein the pillars are configured to support an amphiphilic membrane arranged to contact polar medium contained in the recess; and
wherein the pillars are set back from edges of the recess as viewed from the opening and positioned opposed to one another around the recess.
